CompTIA to End Lifetime Project+ Certification

As IT continues to extend beyond horizons unimaginable decades ago, our knowledge and the way we go about projects has changed with it. This especially comes to mind when AI is involved. I myself have always wondered why the Project+ certification was still lifetime as ways to go about projects have come and gone over the decades I've intermingled with professional workplaces. I remember the days when being a Sigma Six Black Belt not only sounded cool, but was a hot commodity. I see us in IT as similar to doctors and if doctors have to keep up with their education in all aspects then why shouldn't we? They heal people and we heal computer systems...no matter how troublesome they are.

CompTIA has announced that it will be ending the lifetime status of it's Project+ certification. Beginning October 1st, 2025 those that pass the exam will be apart of CompTIA's continuing education program which entails having to renew the certification every 3 years by:

  • Paying the renewal fee and using continuing education credits earned by doing approved activities (IE: actively working in a related IT field, being an active SME for CompTIA, taking a study course, etc.)

  • Passing a higher level exam which will automatically renew lower certifications (for example passing my Security+ automatically renewed my A+ & Network+ certifications, but not my Linux+)

  • Taking one of CompTIA's CertMasterCE courses which will automatically renew relevant exams

For those wondering, there unfortunately is no official "free" way to renew certifications outside of being one of the lucky few that gets handed a CompTIA exam voucher through a school program, helping CompTIA develop exams through becoming a SME, or having someone give you theirs. Those that previously passed the Project+ exam are in luck as their lifetime status will remain valid for the time being. This means no need to renew for them.

Below is the email sent out to Project+ certification holders:

Dear [Project+ Certification Holder,]

We’re reaching out to let you know that the Project+ certification program is expanding to include a Continuing Education (CE) option in October 2025.

What’s changing?

Beginning October 1, 2025, anyone who earns a Project+ certification will receive a credential that must be renewed every three years to remain active.

What does this mean for you?

Your current “Good for Life” Project+ certification remains valid—no renewal or action is required. You will continue to hold your lifetime credential without any changes.

Looking ahead:

When the CE program launches for Project+, you’ll have the opportunity—but not the requirement—to participate in continuing education activities.

As skills and technologies in this field continue to evolve, engaging in CE can help you stay current, sharpen your expertise, and demonstrate up-to-date knowledge through industry-recognized activities. We’ll let you know once the CE option for Project+ is available.

Thank you for being a valued part of the CompTIA Project+ community.

Best regards,

The CompTIA Team
